I'm a newbie to the forum, and pretty much a newbie to "serious" photography... but having fun nonetheless!
These are a couple of the better shots I've gotten to date with my D40.
The snow picture was shot lying down on the lake, and exposed for the snow.
The picture of my girl (3 months ago already!) was from as far across the room as I could get, with the 55-200mm tele zoomed way in to shorten the depth. She is of course my favorite subject to shoot, but then again, she's also the main reason I don't have a lot of time to shoot carefully thought out pictures :-)
Welcome KCourter (AKA NooB, creative name)!
Both shots are fantastic!
Your little one is quite the cutie, hope to see more.
Please take the time to fill out your profile so that we may know you better.
The snow pic is very artistic, you have quite the natural eye.

Welcome to the forum NooB!
Your little girl is precious. That's an excellent shot of her.
What's this with the "serious photography"? Both shots are well thought out and executed. If this is an indication of your non-serious photography, then your gonna blow us away when you do get serious! Keep up the great work, and let us see some more.

Hey NooB, good job!
My name is Bruce and I am the current president of the Miami club. Your pictures are very good and deserve the priase you've been getting. The perspective of the snow on the lake really sets it off from other winter pics I've seen. And the blue sky is really dramatic. Did you use a polarizer filter on that shot? Just curious, what were your camera settings (ASA, f-stop, shutter speed) and what lens were you using?
As far as your daughter goes, what can I say. She is so cute! Does she always pose that well for you? You might have America's next top model there!
Keep up the good work and welcome to the club. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks for the very warm welcome.
I guess what I meant by "serious" pictures is ones that I control, rather than just doing the "spray and pray" and hope the camera figures out what I meant to get a picture of. I've always tried to frame good shots (and taken LOTS of them with better and better point and shoot cameras over the years) but the D40 marks the beginning of trying to understand why the picture came out the way it did.
My girl Graysen definitely does not usually pose that well, usually she is on some mission or another and I'm lucky to keep up with her, let alone get the camera out in time to freeze her :-)
For the lake shot, I'm proud of that one simply because I nearly drove by it, then did a u-turn to come back to the lake because I knew I had my camera with me! The blue sky did get a bit of help - since I metered off of the snow, even with the low sun the sky didn't pop out so much so I did play with the curves some in photoshop to pull the deep blue out - but mostly what you are seeing is low angle, cold Colorado skies... especially like on a day like that when there are lots of ice crystals in the upper atmosphere, the light is VERY polarized already. The EXIF on that shot says: F11, 1/500th, ASA200 on my 18-55mm Nikon lens...
Unfortunately, on the day I shot that, I almost knew what that combination meant - I had been reading, I set out to bracket and expose to find the "right" shot, and got that one as my best of the day - but since then, due to lack of practice, that new knowledge has kind of slipped away. More practice is needed to make it ingrained.
Thanks again, and I look forward to learning more from all here in the club.
cheers,
Kevin

Great shots NooB!! Your daughter posed for you perfectly. And the snow scene makes me feel the cold. That's what a good shot can do - make you feel like you are right there feeling the moment! Wonderful!!!
