Challenge: Motion
Dolphins in motion - last minute challenge
Ballet Motion
I was very fortunate to be able to attend the Moscow Ballet's production of the Nutcracker a couple of days ago.
Of course, I took my camera.
We were seated about five rows back, and obstructed by many wide and/or tall audience members, but I found myself a small window of clear view - that is unless someone shifted in their seat right as I snapped the shot - so many of my shots are in a portrait orientation.
I used my Nikon Coolpix S10 point-and-shoot. These were all handheld, no flash, and using 800 ISO, so please excuse the many obvious flaws. I just thought these were nice examples of the Challenge theme, motion.
Cyclic Motion
The local cycle club had a training day today. These cyclists are paraplegic and use hand cranked tricycles. I thought them to be a bit of a unique subject for this month's study of motion. I opted for the "reverse motion" technique of focussing the background and blurring the subject.
Musician In Motion
Several months ago I went to see the Army Band perform at the Adrianne Arsht Center. I wanted to see what kind of pictures I could get from a distance, in low light, with no flash. I was not too thrilled with most of the pictures, but I have always liked this one.
Motion Challenge
Here's my entries for the motion Challenge
Tripping the lights fantastic in Hollywood..,
Swing batta batta, watch out Elmo!
Happy Holidays!
Colorful Motion and Pheasants in Motion
Two shots for the motion challenge. The first is a good shot of fireworks at a local festival and the other is of a pair of rooster pheasants having a major dispute over territry. Fireworks pheasants_043
Low flying osprey
Last week we were out at a local wildlife reserve and saw an osprey skimming the water with it's feet trailing behind it in the water. As luck would have it, it decided to make a return run and I managed to get a few shots. Apparently this is quite a common practice but no one really knows why they do it. Suggestions vary from vascular cooling through its feet to washing off remnants of a kill. Anyway, I thought it would make a reasonable entry in this months challenge.
Auto-motion
If you've checked out my web site you will know that photographing auto racing is my main interest. Capturing the sense of speed while keeping the vehicle in focus is always a challenge. I've pulled out three of my attempts for this months challenge.
Fancy Lawn Sprinkler
I took Kaley to the Ramble at Fairchild Tropical Gardens today. Aside from selling plants, there were many other vendors selling their goods. I thought that this one might be good for this challenge. These things cost around $200!
Challenge: Challenge for November - Motion
I borrowed this idea from a presentation that Brian Folsom gave at our last photo club meeting here in Chaska.
Here are a few of the challenges he mentioned that a photographer faces when attempting to capture motion.
- Things happen fast ... and may not happen a second time soon
- The subject doesn’t always move predictably
- Lighting is often less than ideal
- - not in a studio or can’t use a flash
- - sun behind the photographer
- - low light – night, indoors, stadiums, cloudy, …
- Subject may be distant from photographer
- Zoom lenses make things more difficult
- - frame, focus, & control camera jiggle
I plan on making Brian's Power Point presentation available in the near future for those interested.
Here are a couple of examples that I have taken:
Example 1, Example 2, Example 3
So there you go... Let's see your photography in motion!
