The title, in this case, should further read "...Is A Terrible Thing To Waste."
These are photos I took of one of my students who decided to catch up on some sleep rather than on his Algebra studies.
Now, please understand. I do my very best to keep students from placing their heads down during class, but these are high school kids (15 to 18 years old, really), and I have all the "Repeaters" at that. So, sometimes for all my efforts, they refuse and I have to resort to other measures to keep them engaged in the class.
I have repeatedly warned that anyone who falls asleep in my class will not be roused by me ( I am not their mother), that they risk being late to their next class, and that I will follow up with a call home and administrative disciplinary action. I have also warned that I would take pictures of anyone who fell asleep for documentation, which the students have always responded to with, “Nah! You wouldn’t!”
Well…
This particular day, the students were taking a test. Students do have permission to lay their heads on their desks after they have turned in their completed test, while they wait for the rest of the students to complete theirs.
Apparently, "Joe" didn't hear the dismissal bell, so I couldn't resist placing a "Do Not Disturb" sign on him.
His classmates left, and the next class had already come in for the next period, and still Joe did not stir. I let him continue sleeping well into the next class, however that class is not run by me, but by another teacher who uses my room. As a courtesy to that teacher, and as Joe still did not stir, I thought I better go ahead and wake him up
... but not before I got a few pictures.
The rest of the students also took advantage of the photo op. What student doesn't carry a cell phone these days?
And then I woke him … with an air horn that I keep in my desk!
He was a really good sport about it, I wrote him a tardy excuse for his next class, and he has never put his head down on his desk since. And, neither has anyone else from his class, for that matter! :o)
